Oprah with The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

Oprah loves to spend the summer catching up on her reading, and this year one novel stood out from all the rest. "From the moment I picked up this book, I had a sneaking suspicion that I'd just found our next book club selection," she says. Once Oprah finished reading, she knew for sure. "I'm jumping on the bandwagon because this book has been on the New York Times best-seller list for 13 weeks, but when you read it, you'll understand why I had to choose it," Oprah says. "It's so engaging, so gripping, so epic, that I wanted absolutely everybody to share the joy of The Story of Edgar Sawtelle."

Part mystery, part family saga and part love story, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is an unforgettable novel about the bond between a boy and his dogs. Oprah says this book, written by first-time novelist David Wroblewski, is already a classic. "I think that this is right up there with the greatest American novels ever written," Oprah says. "Up there with Steinbeck and even Harper Lee."
Oprah

Oprah's not the only one who read The Story of Edgar Sawtelle this summer. "I made everybody who came to visit me ... stay on the porch and read this particular book," Oprah says.

If you're about to pick up a copy of the novel, Oprah has one important piece of advice. "Do not read the inside cover, because that will give you too much information," she says. "I read the inside cover, and I knew too much to start. It's part mystery, and if you want it to remain a mystery, do not read the inside cover. Just start with the first chapter."
David Wroblewski

Oprah says the minute she finished The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, she was dying to talk to David Wroblewski. "It's one of those books that when you're done, you just want to talk to the author and say, 'How did you do that?'"

David's Skyping in to the Oprah Show studio from his home office in Colorado and says he worked on this novel for an entire decade. "My earliest memories have to do with dogs," David says. "So I've been working actively on the novel for about 10 years, but the thoughts that I've had about telling the story of people's relationship with dogs go back almost as long as I can remember."
