Dr. Alice Dreger is shedding light on what it means to be intersex by explaining this condition. "Intersex is when people are born with various kinds of sex anomalies," she says. Being intersex is different than being  transgendered. "Transgender is about a gender identity," she says. "And so when somebody is born, everybody gets a gender assignment. Even kids who are intersex get a gender assignment as boy or as girl." Learn more about growing up intersex and read an excerpt from the book Middlesex.
