The Home Stretch

When the interview ended, David and Emily showed Oprah and Gayle around. First they saw how David and Emily wash their clothes—using an old-fashioned Maytag washing machine hooked up to a Honda motor and a ringer.

"My grandmother had one of those!" Oprah said.

The tour continued with a stop in the dairy barn, and a lunch of freshly baked bread, green salad from the garden, and strawberry shortcake for dessert. "That's one thing that most Amish women know—how to cook—I'll tell you," David said.
