Aired on 09/24/1997 | CC tv-pg
On August 31, 1997, the world grieved at having lost the adored Princess Diana to a fatal car crash, and world-renowned pop star Elton John lost his close and dear friend. That same year, Elton appeared as a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show to discuss how he had been coping since Diana's death.

The musician also opened up about other struggles he had faced throughout his life, not least of which was a serious drug addiction. "I knew I had a problem," he told Oprah, "and the hardest thing for me was I thought I could solve everything myself."

Although Elton considered himself a very intelligent, successful man of considerable means, he eventually came to realize that he couldn't beat his addiction alone. Here, Elton reveals the three words that he credits for saving his life—and how they could help anyone who's hit rock bottom to get clean again.
