Darwin and Gabarnmung Cave
Where We Stayed:
Holiday Inn Darwin
: Darwin is the Northern Territory's capital, a modern, tropical city that sits on a harbor twice the size of Sydney's. Considered Australia's most culturally diverse city, more than 50 nationalities make up Darwin's population, including the area's traditional Aboriginal landowners.
What We Saw:
Gabarnmung Rock Shelter:
At this ancient site, experience truly rare artwork, seen by less than 26 non-indigenous people since its discovery. Gabarnmung translates to Hole-in-the-Rock, and this site is also referred to as “The Barra Site,” which is the name of the area in which the cave rests. In 2006, a chance sighting from a helicopter led to its' extraordinary discovery. The traditional owners of the land, the Jawoyn, believe their ancestors created the cave paintings more than 35,000 years ago.
Where We Ate:
: The modern Asian-inspired décor at Hanuman makes it one of Darwin's best-known restaurants. The exotic, fresh and brilliantly spiced food has been created by the territory's own celebrity chef, Jimmy Shu, who is one of Australia's best Asian cuisine chefs.
