As the capital city of Australia, Canberra is home to many government officials and public servants, and nine of The Oprah Show
's Ultimate Viewers had the pleasure of exploring both the historic and modern elements this area has to offer.
Where We Ate:
: As a special treat, U.S. Ambassador Jeffrey Bleich hosted a lunch for our Ultimate Viewers along with his wife, children and Canberra Parliamentary members, among others.
What We Saw:
National Gallery of Australia
: The Ultimate Viewers toured the new Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander art galleries where they became immersed in some of the oldest and richest traditions in human history, from the 200 hollow log coffins of the Aboriginal Memorial to the striking printed textiles created by Aboriginal artists.
: With its grand marble staircase, 3,000 original artworks, eucalyptus-green colors in the House of Representatives and outback-tinted reds of the Senate, a tour of the Parliament House is a must for anyone looking to get a glimpse into the Australian government.
: The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum and an extensive archive to create a poignant place of remembrance, reflection and honor. Its purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war. Visitors can tour the memorial, explore museum exhibits, browse the Roll of Honor and more. Ultimate Viewers also had the unique honor of laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Solder in a special ceremony.
