Michelle Obama on the Obamas' First White House Christmas: "It Was Just Absolutely Magical"

Aired on 12/13/2009 | CC tv-pg
In 2009, Oprah sat down with President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama to get a behind-the-scenes look at the first family's first Christmas in the White House.

As it was the inaugural year of the Obama administration, the president and first lady had been experiencing plenty of firsts since moving into the White House—from President Obama's first Cabinet meeting to the first night spent in their new home. However, Michelle told Oprah, their first Christmas is the experience she treasured the most.

"I've never visited the White House during Christmas," the first lady said, "and it was just absolutely magical."

The Obamas also remembered frolicking in their first snowfall of the season. "It was pretty," President Obama said, adding that the first lady took their daughters, Malia and Sasha, out into the snow on sleds that White House carpenters had made out of cookie trays.

In the clip above, the first couple reflects on their journey to the White House, and they open up about whether the presidency redefined their marriage.
