Lisa Ling Goes on a "Trash Tour" with Dumpster-Diving Freegans

Aired on 02/27/2008 | CC tv-pg
It was a chilly Friday night in New York City, and intrepid reporter Lisa Ling was digging through garbage bags on the sidewalk.

Lisa's curiosity has taken her to many strange places. This particular night, Lisa was trying to get a better understanding of the freegan movement, a lifestyle devoted to reclaiming and eating food that has been discarded. That night, the freegans rooted through garbage cans to find fish that hadn't reached its sell-by date, broccoli that was greener than the vegetables in Lisa's refrigerator, and heaps of foods that were still immaculately packaged and safe.

Watch the video above to find out how much food might be getting thrown out by your grocery store on a nightly basis.
