When he joined SNL's cast in 1985 at the age of 20, Robert Downey Jr. was already a movie star, having appeared in some of his filmmaker father's movies and Brat Pack comedies. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Robert was known as much for his downward spiral of drug addiction, a prison sentence and multiple rehab stints as his acclaimed acting. But by 2004, Robert was clean and sober, and appeared on The Oprah Show to talk about his substance abuse recovery and marriage, promote his album The Futurist and reveal his devotion to the practice of Wing Chun Kung Fu.

While his time on SNL was short, Damon Wayans remains one of the most controversial cast members in the show's history. According to the book Live from New York, he was reportedly fired for changing his character from a police officer to a flamboyantly gay man in the middle of the sketch—on live television. Damon went on to star in the sketch show In Living Color and a string of Hollywood movies, and appeared on The Oprah Show in 2004 along with other members of his famously funny family.

What a difference 15 years makes! In 1996, SNL writer and actor Al Franken—best known for his goofy, self-help spouting Stuart Smalley character—appeared on The Oprah Show with Arianna Huffington. At the time, Al was described as a liberal comedian and Arianna was described as a right-wing columnist and author. Today, Al is a U.S. senator from Minnesota and Arianna is the founding editor and namesake of the left-leaning website The Huffington Post.

Phil Hartman

Phil Hartman appeared along with his Sgt. Bilko co-stars Steve Martin and Dan Aykroyd in 1996, and talked about some of his SNL characters, his work on the sitcom NewsRadio and his famous Bill Clinton impersonation. Phil was also known for lending his voice to several supporting characters on The Simpsons and for helping create Pee-wee's Playhouse.
Phil was killed by his wife Brynn in 1998.

SNL vet Kevin Nealon's favorites from 2000 were A Dangerous Fortune by Ken Follett and Snow Falling on Cedars. "I don't remember who wrote that one," Kevin joked. "So we'll just say I wrote it." Actually, it's by David Guterson. Our favorite Kevin characters include Subliminal Man and one-half (with Dana Carvey) of the pumped-up Hans and Franz.

Julia Sweeney

Julia Sweeney
Most famous for her androgynous character Pat, Julia appeared on The Oprah Show in 1997. She performed a monologue from her one-woman Broadway play, God Said Ha!, based on the true story of when both she and her brother both battled cancer and her parents moved into her home. The play was later turned into a book, a Grammy-nominated comedy album and a movie co-produced by Quentin Tarantino.

By the time of her 2001 appearance on The Oprah Show, Christine Ebersole had moved from SNL's Rockefeller Center studio to a Tony-winning role in 42nd Street on Broadway. Christine and her husband, Bill Moloney, told Oprah how Bill had left his job in the music industry to be a stay-at-home dad to their "transracial" family of three adopted children.
