A statement on behalf of Carmen Huertas: Carmen Huertas is the loving mother of three young children: Ernesto, 14 years old; Brittany, 11 years old;and Edward Enrique, 18 months.
She is devastated following the death of Leandra Rosado, her daughter's best friend, and the injuries to the other children in the car.
Since the date of the tragic accident, Carmen has been in a hospital, first to address her physical injuries and currently to address the psychological trauma she continues to suffer from. She is distraught and remains under suicide watch.
Carmen wishes to extend her heartfelt condolences to the Rosado family. She loved Leandra, as she loved all of the children in her car that evening, and will live with the consequences of that night until the day she dies.
A statement from Ernesto and Brittany Gonzalez: Both Ernesto Gonzalez and his daughter, Brittany, are devastated by the events that occurred on October 11, 2009. Based on Ms. Huertas' actions on that evening, Brittany now lives with the deep sadness of losing Leandra Rosado, a close friend and schoolmate. On top of that, Mr. Gonzalez came horribly close to losing his only daughter. Brittany, who is only 11 years old, is now faced with the untenable dilemma of being victim on one hand and daughter on the other. Her father, Mr. Gonzalez, is now faced with the monumental task of keeping his family together and guiding his daughter through this tragic situation.
