Once they decided to take the trip, Anne and Tom had to start preparing—and there was a lot to take into consideration. First of all—what do you pack for a 365-day trip for six? As little as possible, says Anne. "A key for being portable is to take very little, and so we really had to be careful about planning, and we have very little clothing," she says. "We took the essentials, but really tried to keep things to a minimum because we're on the go all the time. Everything's got to fit on our backs."
In addition to packing, Tom and Anne had to figure out how their four school-age children would continue their lessons on their adventure. So the two older boys are enrolled in online classes through an American university, and Anne has taken on teaching duties for the younger kids.
