More comfortable in front of his typewriter than a TV camera, Cormac McCarthy opens up to Oprah about how after three wives, he still finds women mysterious . The bigger mystery, however, is how anytime things look bleak for McCarthy, life seems to send him just what he needs. (Once, when he was too poor to afford toothpaste, he went down to the mailbox and found a free sample in the mail.) He has known the sparseness he describes in his book The Road , but, he says, "You've got to have food and shoes."
