Explore Steinbeck Country The National Steinbeck Center is an $11 million, 37,000 square foot museum and archive in Salinas, California, John Steinbeck's birthplace. The Center presents the life of John Steinbeck, his writings, his characters and Steinbeck Country in an informative and entertaining matter for all ages.
Interactive exhibits let you experience the cool air of the lettuce boxcar in East of Eden, hear the seagulls of Cannery Row, and brush the mane of The Red Pony. You can also catch a scene from one of Steinbeck's award-winning films, including Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath.
Steinbeck called the Salinas Valley "The Valley of the World" when describing the story that would later become East of Eden. On September 1, 2003, the new Valley of the World Agricultural Wing will open, exploring the county's agricultural heritage and historical roots. The state-of-the-art exhibition takes you on an interpretive, interactive tour of the history, technology and rich cross-section of people who work and live in the Valley of the World.
Each year, the Center hosts the Annual Steinbeck Festival, This year's festival, "Collaborators and Connections," takes place August 7–10, 2003 and features four days of speakers, walking and bus tours, and theater.
