GroupMe: Creating or Joining a Personalized Reading Group

Q: What is GroupMe and what does it have to do with reading groups?

A: GroupMe is the best way to chat with everyone you know. It allows you to group-text message anyone, regardless of what kind of phones you're all using. If you have a smartphone, use the GroupMe app for iPhone, Android, or Windows Phone. If you don't, no problem; it works over regular SMS too!

GroupMe groups are a great way to start conversations on The Twelve Tribes of Hattie or Oprah's Book Club 2.0 with your friends & reading groups. Visit GroupMe.com/oprahsbookclub to get started. Just enter your name and phone number, and GroupMe will walk you through the rest!

Q: Should I create my own group?

Yes! Once you've found Oprah's Book Club 2.0 group in GroupMe (see above), you can start your own group. You can invite specific friends via their mobile phone number or email address. Or, you can toggle the group to be “Open,” giving you a unique URL to invite people to your group over GroupMe, Facebook, or email.

Q: Is GroupMe free to use?

GroupMe charges you nothing—it's a free service if you're using the mobile app or GroupMe.com. However, please be aware that if you're using the text messaging feature outside of the mobile app, standard text messaging rates (as per your agreement with your cell phone carrier) may apply. Each text you send to a GroupMe number counts as one text to a mobile phone number—you are NOT sending five messages if your group has five members.

Q: I have questions that you haven't answered.

A: If you have other questions about the GroupMe service, visit Help.GroupMe.com/home.

How does an author get his or her book reviewed for the Oprah's Book Club?

Oprah's Book Club 2.0 is unlike any other in the way that Oprah Winfrey picks the books on her own. That being the case, we don't accept submissions from authors—but we deeply appreciate all the authors who are interested in being a part of our book club and all the hard work they dedicate to their art.
