You Should Care

Oprah.com   |   February 28, 2007
Dr. Robin Smith
How much do you care about things that don't directly impact you? Is the AIDS issue something you ignore because you don't have it and don't know anyone who does? What about cancer? Illiteracy? Poverty?

These issues, and hundreds of others, are real things that real people all over the world are suffering with, Dr. Robin says. If you're not concerned with them because they don't impact you, Dr. Robin urges you to examine your heart. "Examine how big you are, how big your heart is, how big your world of care is," Dr. Robin says. "Is it just about the things that are impacting you?"

Dr. Robin says it's good for us to care about someone else's circumstances or situations because they're a human being just like we are. Don't wait until the issue starts affecting you directly before you start caring. "Start to care before it knocks on your door; before it comes to your doorstep," Dr. Robin says.

She urges us to pick an issue that has no direct impact on you or your family and decide to do something about it. "Decide that you're not just going to whisper a prayer for someone—you're going to do something concrete today," Dr. Robin says. "You're going to make a phone call, make a financial donation, or you might even take it one step further. Maybe you'll take you, your children and family, and [volunteer]."
