Writer Simon Doonan
He's the man responsible for the exciting window displays at Barneys department store in New York. As Barneys's creative director, Simon Doonan has a talent for dressing windows—and he also has an eye for dressing women. Gayle talks with Simon about fashion advice from his new book Eccentric Glamour: Creating an Insanely More Fabulous You.
According to Simon, today's women are taking it too far when it comes to fashion. Whether it's with modern-day beauty products such as fake hair and nails or cosmetic procedures to enlarge breasts and pump up lips, Simon says he's bothered by this trend. "That look of fake hair, fake nails, fake tan, fake lips, fake [breasts] is very reductive—it makes every woman into a Stepford wife." In Eccentric Glamour, Simon points to actresses like Sarah Jessica Parker—who he says has a unique and interesting style that separates her from the crowd—as a fashion role model for women. "She put eccentric glamour on the map," he says. If her look isn't yours, Simon offers other options, including "gypsy" or "extensionalist" (like Björk and Tilda Swinton), "socialite," or "turned-out glamour" (like Jackie O). No matter how you decide to dress, Simon just asks that you steer clear of the hypersexy "ho" look he says prevails on reality TV. "In this day and age, you can transform yourself any way you want, but are you going to transform yourself into something eccentric and glamorous and interesting—that expresses who you are? Or are you going to dress like a 'ho?'"
