What do you do when you need to work something out? When you're grappling with a problem or feeling stressed, perhaps you reach for food and overeat. Or maybe you grab your credit card and go on a shopping spree to ease your pain.
Dr. Robin says there are both productive and counterproductive ways to work through your problems. While it's sometimes helpful to see a therapist, other problems may just call for positive problem-solving tactics to help you clear your mind and work through your issues. For example, you might hit the gym, go for a long walk or even clean your house. "Sometimes sweat is the best form of therapy," Dr. Robin says. Acknowledge that you have things to work out, identify how you're handling them and then see if you need some healthier methods for dealing with them. "Stop running, stop putting Band-Aids on gunshot wounds and figure out exactly what it is you need to do so that you can truly work through things," she says. Published on January 01, 2008
