The youngest woman ever to hold the title of master sommelier, 30-year-old Alpana Singh is a wine expert—but she has a laid-back approach to teaching others about her passion. Nate talks with Alpana about wine and dating advice found in her new book, Alpana Pours: About Being a Woman, Loving Wine, and Having Great Relationships.
Ordering wine in a restaurant can be stressful for many people, but Alpana says you don't have to worry about pronouncing the name of a wine or pairing it perfectly with food. "It's really about just trusting your own instincts and trusting what you like," Alpana says. "If you found a great $6 bottle of wine, good for you, enjoy it!"
Wine is the focus of Alpana's new book, but she also delves into relationship advice, which she says comes from her experience working in one of Chicago's four-star restaurants. For example, Alpana says she can tell that a date is headed south if the guy doesn't order a bottle of wine. "It takes a long time to drink a bottle, so if he orders a bottle, he wants the date to last," she says. "But if it is by the glass or if he orders beer, then he is just kind of like, 'I just want to get this done and over with.'"
If your date orders a bottle of champagne on the first or second date, Alpana says you shouldn't be "wowed." "That is kind of a smooth operator move," Alpana says. "You are not the only one he is going to see that week." While Alpana says the way your date orders wine can be telling, the best date asks for your input before ordering. "He really listens to you and wants to know what your tastes are, and then he orders based on what you want," she says.
