Getting children involved in public service from an early age will instill in them an ethic of giving back that will last a lifetime, Rabbi Shmuley says. It will also inspire real change in the country, he says. "Envision a United States where its citizens band together to reestablish our heritage of citizen service," Rabbi Shmuley says. "Imagine the impact a nation of volunteers could have on improving our biggest societal challenges, like poverty, homelessness, fixing our schools and pollution."
Rabbi Shmuley talks about the importance of getting children involved in public service and suggests easy ways for children to volunteer. Age-appropriate volunteering opportunities for children Today's Shmuleyism: "One of the most important parts of a child's education is to go beyond their own self-interest. To give rather than take. To be selfless rather than selfish. That will not come about through speeches and wishing that your kids would give back. It only comes about through parents and educators mandating that service be a part of their child's education—to serve a cause higher than themselves."
