When you're trying to live a healthy life, you hear a lot about vitamins and supplements, but it's hard to know which ones to take. To give you a little more information before you head into the health food store, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen talk to Chris Conway, founder of the WellSpring Clinic and owner of Healthy Humans, both in Wayne, Pennsylvania.
Chris says that his store's objective is to give people the information that deals with specific issues they're having, in order for them to work with their doctor to make decisions about their health. He provides materials that show what kinds of research have been done and what kind of side effects can be expected, and he promotes the evidence of the benefits of taking daily supplements. Ultimately, he says, "my job is to provide information to educate [customers] to make good decisions."
With so many supplements on the market, it's important to find products from a reputable manufacturer. Chris says look out for these things to ensure the manufacturing company is legitimate:
A reputable company will list all pertinent information regarding ingredients and toxicity on their product label.
If you call the company, they will send you an assay of their product.
Another indicator is that the product is produced in an FDA-approved laboratory, meaning it's held to the highest standards.
When a consumer calls for verification, these companies send a certificate of FDA compliance.
