Trends in Home Design

Adam Glassman is the creative director behind many of the home and fashion designs you see in O, The Oprah Magazine. Nate talks with Adam about the latest trends in home design, including a shift toward budget furnishings.

From discount stores to home furnishings shops, Adam says the look is all luxury—but at a bargain price. "Everyone wants a piece of what is known as luxurious items," Adam says. "So these mass marketers have figured out that they can create something that looks luxurious and feels luxurious and has the same kind of sensibilities, but at a [low] price point." The concept is something that Adam says has been happening in Europe for some time—and now, American stores are doing a good job of catching on to the idea.

As for the latest trends in home design, Adam says there are three areas that are very hot:

  • Color: Adam says using color in your home is the thing to do. "I think people traditionally tend to be afraid or don't know how to incorporate color in their home," Adam says. "But everywhere you look from high [end] to low [end], there are hits of color everywhere."
  • Eclectic Mix: The old trend was to mix ethnic pieces with modern furniture—but Adam says the new trend is to mix heavily carved, gilded and antique pieces with contemporary furnishings. "I think America is ready for understanding how to mix modern with antique and more eclectic things," Adam says.
  • Eco-friendly/Green: Adam says he is excited about the trend to use sustainable and organic products in design. "I think this is a trend that is not just trendy," Adam says. "I think it is a trend that is going to become a constant and become a classic and just become way of life and a way to live."
