Jean Chatzky
Most people recognize Dr. Gail Saltz as Today's mental health contributor. In addition, Dr. Saltz is a psychiatrist with NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, as well as an author and columnist. Her latest book, Anatomy of a Secret Life, examines the parts of all of us that no one knows about. She tackles some big issues, including when secrets become destructive and what drives people to lead double lives. Jean and Gail discuss everything from prayer to the secret lives that people harbor when it comes to their finances.
  • Dr. Saltz says that human nature includes suffering, but we aren't very good at accepting it. The self-help industry is a $9.6 billion industry because people are searching.
  • Jean and Dr. Saltz also touch on the phenomenon of The Secret, the principle that like attracts like. Dr. Saltz says that while it's important to believe in yourself, nothing will come to you unless you take action.
  • Being a positive thinker absolutely works, says Dr. Saltz. If you behave and think differently, some things outside you will change, including your relationships and even your ability to make money. But you have to work for it as well.
  • Dr. Saltz says women often bury their heads in the sand when it comes to money, and feel as though they are supposed to be sweet and passive in that arena.
  • Women need to realize that assertiveness and competitiveness are feminine qualities, Dr. Saltz says.
  • Envision that you have a role in your finances and encourage yourself, Dr. Saltz says. You'll get there.
