Many months ago, Dr. Robin got a brand new set of professional makeup brushes, and yet, she says she found herself reaching for her old, worn-out brushes day after day. While she was using fresh, high-quality makeup, she says she continued to apply it with her poor-quality applicators. Finally, Dr. Robin says that one morning it dawned on her that in order to force herself to start using the new brushes she would have to toss out the old ones.
What is it in your life that needs to be thrown out—not shoved to the side, put in the closet, or kept "just in case" you might need it someday—but really tossed out? It may be something you're comfortable and familiar with, but if it's not doing the job, it needs to go, Dr. Robin says. "Not only is it not useful, it is getting in the way," she says. "It is actually draining your life—it is taking away from how good your [life] could be because you simply are married and stuck to the old." Whether it's a new tool, or a new way of relating to the people in your life, know that it will take time to adjust—but she says it will be worth the effort. "Let's really step up to the plate and throw out what isn't working anymore."
