Dr. Mehmet Oz
The dynamic duo is back at it! The YOU Docs are taking your calls and answering your questions about all things health-related. Today, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen coach one caller who wants to know how she can prepare herself for surgery, both physically and mentally, and give her body the best recovery possible. Here are some of their tips!

The YOU Docs Advice on Preparing for Surgery:

  • Get informed. Ask your doctors questions and don't hesitate to get a second opinion: "A smart patient is the most valuable asset in healthcare," Dr. Oz says.
  • Be holistic in your approach. Consider getting treatment at a hospital with an integrative medicine program. Meditation, music therapy, guided imagery and massage are just a few of the techniques that Dr. Oz recommends for healing.
  • Look at your surgery as an opportunity for personal growth. "There's a wonderful set of lessons that come to us if, when we're ill, we're willing to listen to the message," Dr. Oz says. "It does make one think about the purposes of life, the value of the friends that you have around you and perhaps think a little bit more deeply about how you can pull all those pieces together."
  • Stay in shape. Although daily exercise is important for everyone, Dr. Roizen says it's especially important to stay active in the weeks leading up to and following a surgery to aid in your recovery. He recommends 30 minutes of daily walking. In addition, every day you lay in bed will cost you 10 full days of recovery, Dr. Oz says.
  • Find support in the form of an advocate. "Get a lead advocate to organize all your friends so that someone is in the hospital with you and acts as your advocate, that is, checks out everything that is going to happen to you," Dr. Roizen says.
