The Value of Rest

Oprah.com   |   August 14, 2007
Dr. Robin Smith
Dr. Robin recently noticed how the lilies growing in her yard blossom during the day and then completely close during the night. This beautiful and profound act of nature, Dr. Robin says, is a perfect metaphor for the cycle of our own lives, too.

Like the lilies, we must rest during the night so that we can be wide-awake and energized during the day, she says. "We need to revisit what it is that has depleted us from having opened ourselves during the day and find rest for our bodies and our spirits and our minds and our souls and our relationships," she says.

The next time you get ready for bed, Dr. Robin suggests reflecting on the importance of the nighttime hours that you may take for granted. "[Sleep is] a necessary nutrient to replenish you so that you can really use the light of the day to live your best life—to carve out what you want and to be the beautiful blossoming human being that you can be," she says. "But night is essential so that day really works best for you."
