For six months, investigative reporter Charles Morris embedded himself in the cardiac surgery center at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City to get an in-depth look into the high-pressure world of heart surgeons. He followed Dr. Craig Smith, the unit's head and a renowned heart surgeon, to gain insights into the ins and outs and ups and downs of a cardiac surgeon's life and work, which he chronicles in his book The Surgeons: Life and Death in a Top Heart Center. Dr. Oz talks with Charles and Dr. Smith about their collaboration and some of the key points in the book.
