Dr. Mario Beauregard says he was just a child when he began having mystical, out-of-body experiences, which would later influence his decision to become a scientist. "I became convinced that the mind, soul and brain were all interrelated but were not the same thing," he says. Dr. Oz talks with Dr. Beauregard about his book The Spiritual Brain: A Neuroscientist's Case for the Existence of the Soul and the subject of exploring the mind.
In his book, Dr. Beauregard explores the existence of a "soul" and demonstrates there is a spiritual component of human nature that can't be reduced to electrical and chemical processes in the brain. He also discusses the reality of a spiritual mind that survives physical death and provides insights into a human being's experience with religion and God. Dr. Beauregard also discusses the difference between the brain and the mind in the different belief systems in medicine. "I think the mind and consciousness can survive the physical mind of the body," he says. "If you are able to realize the power you have to influence what is going on in your brain and your physical body, it can bring tremendous benefits."
