Has there been a time in your life when you were at your wits end? Maybe you felt so overwhelmed, you weren't sure how to go on. Dr. Robin says that she calls that feeling of despair the "silent scream." "Right now that scream in you that has been silent needs to be heard—not because you are weak, not because you are bad, not because you are a loser—but simply because you are clothed in humanity," she says.
Dr. Robin says when you experience the silent scream, things may appear normal on the outside, but inside, the heart and mind are reeling. Talking to someone and expressing your feelings can keep the silent scream from taking over and causing you to harm yourself or possibly others, she says.
If you are concerned that someone you know or love is experiencing the silent scream and they are suddenly drawing in and keeping to themselves, Dr. Robin says that you should check in with them. "Sometimes we are fragile, and at all times we need someone to help us along the way," Dr. Robin says.
