The Serenity Prayer is a well-known prayer that Dr. Robin loves: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference." Dr. Robin says the prayer speaks to her because "it really calls forth the very truth of what is possible."
In order to use the prayer in your own life, Dr. Robin suggests making a list of the conversations and issues you discuss with others that never seem to get resolved. "And then, this is the critical part—I want you to decide whether or not those are issues that actually you have no power over, [things] you can't do a thing about," she says. Then, make another list about the things you can do, the things you can change, she says.
Reflect on your two lists and use the serenity prayer to guide you, Dr. Robin says. "Use the wisdom to know the difference between those lists and make sure your energy always goes on the side of feeding that which you really can change."
