According to Devra Davis, the battle against cancer has historically focused on treating the symptoms of the disease rather than eradicating many of its known causes. What's more, Devra says businesses, politicians and special interest groups have hampered the search for a cure and preventative measures by casting doubts on known carcinogens while promoting harmful substances, including tobacco, benzene, asbestos, diagnostic radiation and even sunlight.
Dr. Oz talks with Devra, the director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, about these issues, which she outlines in her book The Secret History of the War on Cancer.
