The Meaning of Music
Dr. Maya Angelou

Dr. Angelou examines the simple yet profound question of what it means to be an American. She talks with a Hispanic-American woman, whose grandmother opened one of the first Mexican restaurants in Chicago, about her lifelong journey of understanding and embracing her cultural heritage and identity. Dr. Angelou recalls stories about her own grandmother, who she says shared a similar can-do attitude and commitment to the community as the caller's grandmother had.

Then, a woman from Northern Virginia talks about why the spirit of giving is so fundamental to her understanding of what it means to be American. She talks about modeling positive behavior for children so those values can be passed on from one generation to the next.

Plus, Dr. Angelou talks with a caller who was born in Germany before moving with her family to the United States at age 10. The caller—who grew up in Southern California, went to college in upstate New York and now lives with her family near Santa Barbara—talks about the regional flavors of America, the endless opportunities available to American citizens and why she values travel as a tool for learning about how others live.
