If you're following a recipe that requires an expensive ingredient and you leave that ingredient out, Dr. Robin says you're likely wasting your time in the kitchen. "You decide you don't have the time; it's too expensive—all the laundry list of reasons why we cut corners," she says. "So you decide you are going to bake the cake or make the casserole [anyway], and you taste it and [it doesn't taste right]."
While being stuck with a sub-par dish is one thing, Dr. Robin says cutting corners in your personal life can cause much greater problems. "If you can get around a certain issue, if you can find a way to get your needs met but not pay attention to the [other] needs—don't believe that ultimately won't backfire on you," she says.
The next time you are tempted to cut the corners in a recipe or in life, Dr. Robin says you should try to be aware of your actions and remember that there are reasons why rules, regulations and recipes exist and work. "Don't cut the corners—you'll ultimately be sorry and you'll waste more time," she says.
