Organizing a small space can be difficult, but it's not impossible. Peter and professional organizer Stacey Agin Murray, who writes for Organize magazine, team up to share advice with a caller who lives in a 700-square-foot apartment in New York City and needs help getting organized.

Here are their small-space tips:

  • Be ruthless with clutter. Purge anything you absolutely do not need and be extremely selective when making new purchases, both Peter and Stacey say. "If you're not going to create the home you want, no one else will," Peter says.
  • Be careful about buying stuff to organize stuff. Peter says often times the storage containers, boxes and bins become clutter themselves.
  • Embrace vertical space. "Go up if you can't go out," Stacey says.
  • Avoid paying for storage. Rather than storing spillover from your small space, consider getting rid of it instead. "Long-term storage adds up, and that money could be going to so many other things," Stacey says.
