Slavery and servitude can take many forms, Dr. Robin says. You may not have shackles around your ankles, but if you feel emotionally or psychologically tormented, you need to find a way out and set yourself free, she says.
Perhaps you feel abused and beaten down by your spouse, trapped in an unhealthy relationship with your family or mistreated and disrespected by a friend or co-worker. Anytime you find yourself in the middle of a lie, pretending to be happy when you're actually being harmed, that is slavery—and you need to put an end to it, Dr. Robin says.
"Break the silence," she says. "Find a safe way to begin to live outside of slavery—outside of the confines of living a lie—and figure out what it would look like to live in the light of the truth."
