Saying You're Sorry

Oprah.com   |   January 01, 2008
Dr. Robin Smith
When was the last time you apologized to someone? When we are hurt, we are so aware of being a victim, but when we are doing the hurting, we're unaware of the pain it inflicts. "A lot of what I hear in my world is, 'It's all about feeling badly for yourself, being in touch with how someone hurt you, standing up for your rights and telling someone what your needs are'…but that is only half of the picture," Dr. Robin says. The other half of the picture is when you are the one that owes the apology, she says.

"I want you to step up to the plate of full accountability where you have disappointed someone or didn't meet the mark," she says. "I want you to say, 'Not only do I apologize, but I am prepared to make the repair that is necessary.'"
