How can the principles of both science and religion coexist in a person's mind? For Dr. Francis Collins, author of The Language of God, the two are far from being mutually exclusive. Dr. Oz talks to Dr. Collins, who is also the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, about reconciling a scientific understanding of the world with faith.
Dr. Collins shares why he thinks a literal translation of the Judeo-Christian Bible is not necessary for true believers and why Darwin's theory of evolution in no way disputes the existence of God. "As a believer in God, I believe God gave us the intelligence and the ability to explore the natural world using the tools of science, and I also believe God was the creator of all this," Dr. Collins says. "So he could hardly be threatened by what we're discovering, could he?"
