Reaching Out to Others

Dr. Robin Smith
In a time of economic hardship, you shouldn't feel embarrassed to ask for help, Dr. Robin says. She tells the story of her friend's father, who lives in El Salvador and carpools with neighbors and friends to the supermarket and takes others' grocery lists because of high gasoline prices. "Because we're under financial pressure, the crunch is on for us … to actually be a community," she says. "Maybe there's a lesson, a silver lining in the cloud."

Dr. Robin says hard economic times require that people come together as a community. "We can learn how to share what we have and learn how to ask for what we need," she says. "Learn how to humble ourselves and come together as a village that has one common goal: to learn how to support each other in all of our endeavors."
