Playwright Tyler Perry on Forgiveness
Dr. Robin and Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry is known for his many talents, from acting and writing to producing and directing. While Tyler's plays and films have touched on many different storylines and topics, he says there is a common theme at the core of all his work—forgiveness. Dr. Robin talks to Tyler about his latest movie and why forgiveness is such an important part of his life.

Tyler says he grew up in an abusive household and that his suffering as a child wasn't easy to get past as an adult. He says forgiving those who hurt him was instrumental in launching his successful career. "It's so important to forgive people for their wrongs in your own life because every bit of it was for a reason—it was to form the person that you are," he says.

In his newest film, Why Did I Get Married?, Tyler explores the relationships of four married couples who vacation together in the mountains every year. Themes such as infidelity and commitment come up in the film, but Tyler says the movie moves beyond the couples' problems and focuses on forgiveness. "It's a great story about forgiveness," he says. "It's a great story about loving yourself, getting over you pains and your hurt. I am just so proud of this film…I think it is my best film to date."
