One day you have a job, the next day you're laid off. You spend years dreaming up retirement plans with your husband, and then you tragically lose him to an illness. These situations occur all of the time and Dr. Robin says it can be difficult to prepare for the curveballs of life. "Sometimes, we've got a lot of time to plan our moves and plan strategically where we're going to [be]," she says. "Then sometimes, the rug is pulled from underneath."
Thinking ahead about a plan of action in the event of a worst-case scenario can be very helpful in the long run, Dr. Robin says. "Make your plan today, so even when you have one last cry before you have to leave that old life behind, you're going to have something new that you're going to move your life into—[something] that still has meaning, still has purpose, still has passion," she says.
