Superstar Moms
![]() Many moms seem to have superpowers when it comes to raising children and keeping their families happy. So what's their secret? Peter talks with some superstar moms—and one dad—about their insights into parenting and how they keep their families happy and healthy.
Jon and Kate Gosselin, who star in TLC's reality TV show Jon & Kate Plus 8 , are the parents of twins and sextuplets! Kate says it's important to approach parenting with a sense of humor. "If you don't laugh, you'll cry," she says. "So I'd rather laugh than cry!" Jon sums up his key to parenting in three words: "Patience, patience, patience," he says. Jon also advises taking things slow and cherishing every moment. "Taking our time to do things, thinking it through and just enjoying them as children—not so much rushing them through everything—because they're growing up way too fast," he says. As the mother of teen sensations the Jonas Brothers, Denise Jonas may have three superstar sons, but Peter says she and her husband, Kevin Sr., are the real stars in the family. Denise says she's strived to raise responsible, thoughtful children by putting family first and by having a strong sense of faith. "It really is foundational in everything we do," she says. "We are a family with great faith, and we just know that every gift we have is from above." In her book Mama Rock's Rules, Rose Rock shares how she raised comedian Chris Rock and his six siblings. She says the key to parenting is to make a clear distinction between who is the adult and rule-maker in the home and who is the child and rule-follower in the home. Parents who try to be their child's best friend end up doing them a disservice, Rose says. "[Parenting] is not a popularity contest," she says. "It's not about being right—it's about doing what's right. And your kids don't have to like you, but they must respect you."
