It's no a secret that Gayle loves food...and now, she's convinced the powers-that-be at Hearst Tower's Cafe 57 to indulge one of her food fantasies! Gayle talks with Alexia Smith, assistant director of Cafe 57, about an idea to create a day's menu inspired by peaches.
Cafe 57 is open to Hearst employees and their guests, and since O, The Oprah Magazine is located there, Gayle, the magazine's editor-at-large, is a regular. Not to be shy when it comes to good food, Gayle approached Alexia a few weeks ago with a peachy-keen idea. "Gayle said to me, 'Can we just have a day dedicated to peaches?' And, of course I said, 'Yeah, why not?'" Alexis says. August 5, 2008, became the cafe's first Peach Day, with a menu ranging from white peach and avocado salsa to peach watermelon gazpacho to the aptly named Gayle King's Peach Polenta Upside Down Cake. Alexia says it's not unusual for the cafe to have a food festival or special food event based off an employee's suggestion. "We want to keep all the [Hearst] Tower employees coming to the cafe—we try to keep it as exciting as possible," she says. Now that Gayle has her Peach Day, she's put in another food request: Grilled Cheese Day! Alexia says she'll make it happen. "Gayle, I love food, I love cheese, so that is a good one!" she says.
