Overcoming Sexual Abuse
Gayle King and Dominic Carter

He was sexually abused by his own mother at the age of 7. Now, Dominic Carter is sharing his story in an attempt to shed light on the sexual abuse of boys, who he says often hide their trauma and suffer in silence. Gayle talks with Dominic, whose story is featured in "Love Among the Ruins" in the October 2008 issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, about his book No Momma's Boy: How I Let Go of My Past and Embraced the Future, which recounts how he overcome his troubled past to become a successful journalist.

Dominic also talks about the importance of talking about sexual abuse from a man's perspective and about what he's doing to help other victims of sexual abuse. "In our society, boys are not supposed to be the victims of—this is the stereotype—of sexual abuse," he says. "But it's happening, and it happened to me."
