Overcoming Obesity

Oprah.com   |   July 09, 2007
Dr. Robin Smith
The number of deaths in the United States attributed to obesity is on the rise, and Dr. Robin says it is time to do your part to reverse this trend. "There are things you can do that can save your life," she says. "It is never too late to take a situation and turn it around for the best."

While genetics and environment play a role in obesity, Dr. Robin says there is often a deeper reason for overeating and that we have to get to the root of the void that people are trying to fill with food. "Part of it is genetic, of course, but a lot of it has to do with the society," she says. "We are so hungry, we are hungry for approval, we are hungry for keeping up with the Joneses."

There are things you can do to start losing weight, such as cutting fast food out of your diet and walking whenever you can. Dr. Robin says once you start taking small steps, you will become motivated to take better care of yourself. "If you feel good about yourself, you will begin to treat your body and your mind and the way in which you intake food so differently," she says. "You will see food for what it is—it is fuel."
