It was six years ago that designer Nate Berkus first made his debut on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Fast forward a few years, and he now not only has his own show on Oprah Radio, but is also host of the primetime series Oprah's Big Give. Nate talks to Gayle about his experience hosting the show, in which 10 everyday people crisscross the nation to change the lives of total strangers.
Nate says he believes Oprah's Big Give will change the way people feel about reality television. "There's not a dull moment, the intensity is so crazy," Nate says. "It's just a fantastic show." He praises the contestants, who he says were all determined to make a difference by helping others. "Their motivation was pure in that they were really there to give," he says. "People really are there to try and do the best job they can. They are really changing lives." It was Nate's own life-altering experience surviving the Indian Ocean tsunami in 2004 that he says encouraged him to take on the role as host of Oprah's Big Give. Nate lost his partner in the disaster. "The emotional side of it was intense, but one of the things that I took with me from that experience, which has served me really well in everything I do, is that I had to rely on the kindness of strangers for my immediate safety," Nate says. "I had nothing, and to rely on the kindness of strangers for me was such a humbling and incredibly beautiful situation."
