Dr. Robin accompanied a friend to the hospital when she was having knee surgery. Although the nurse at the front desk was kind and polite to Dr. Robin, the three doctors that discussed her friend's procedure didn't even greet her. "It was as if I wasn't even there," she says. Dr. Robin's father, who was a physician, prided himself on being respectful to his patients and their families, Dr. Robin says. She feels that some of these manners may have gone away.
Think of all of the times when you stepped into a scene, a story that's already playing itself out, Dr. Robin says. Be aware of your own actions and how you've addressed someone, or if you've acted as if they weren't there. "Often, it's that we're so absorbed, we're so caught up in the moment, but we're missing the fullness of the moment," Dr. Robin says. "Open your eyes today. It is a gift, an eternal gift that your heart, your soul, your mind and your body need."
