Peter Walsh

Whether you are moving to a new house, combining two households or returning home after college, moving can be very stressful and time consuming. "One of the weird things about moving is that sometimes instead of becoming an event, it can really end up being something that just takes a very long time," Peter says. Peter talks with callers who are about to move and shares tips that can save you time and money and give you peace of mind.

Several callers ask Peter for advice, including Janet who is still living with boxes of stuff—four years after combining households with her new husband. Peter says Janet needs to talk to her husband and come up with a plan to go through the boxes one by one. "Get a plan together and make sure that you clear those boxes," Peter says. "Once the boxes are gone, you will be able to move out of the past and move into some great, wonderful things."

One mistake Peter says people often make when they move is paying movers to pack things of little value. "Very often people pay more to move the stuff then the stuff is actually worth," Peter says. Peter shares his tips for organizing your things and making your move less miserable:

  • Purge all items you don't need before you move.
  • Get rid of old paperwork that you don't need.
  • If you are going to store items, make sure your boxes are protected from the elements.
  • Buy a roll of blue painters tape and tape dresser drawers shut before you move.
  • Spend 15 minutes at a time unpacking boxes, then give yourself a break.
