Tough economic times could be a blessing in disguise, says Dave Pelzer, an author and self-help expert best known for his memoir of childhood abuse, A Child Called "It". Jean talks with Dave about his latest book, Moving Forward: Taking the Lead in Your Life, and about ways to draw strength from negative experiences and bounce back with resilience and a positive mind-set.

Dave says the worst attitude people can take when faced with life's inevitable hardships is the victim mentality. Bad and unfair things will happen, but it's up to the individual to focus on the things they do have control over and make the necessary adjustments, he says. "We have to take responsibility," Dave says.

Whether you're facing economic hardships, relationship problems or health problems, Dave says resilience comes from knowing that "if you can survive cancer, you can survive the flu." Build on past successes, be grateful for what you do have, and know that this, too, shall pass, he says. "It's only for the now," Dave says. "Whatever we're facing, it's not forever."
