As the founder of an upscale matchmaking firm, Barbie Adler is one of the most sought-after experts for sophisticated singles looking to find true love. With more than 30 percent of her clients finding love after their very first introduction, Barbie shares with Gayle her tips for any serious dater who wants to make the most of that crucial first date:
- Keep the mood light and breezy. Have fun, read up on current events before your date and talk about interesting things, Barbie says.
- Silence the stress of the day. Separate your date time from your hectic workday.
- Really take an interest in your date. Be a good listener and get to know the other person. Ask questions if you get nervous, Barbie says.
- Limit distractions. Always turn off your cell phone. If you get distracted easily, sit facing the wall or with your back to the busiest area of the restaurant to avoid looking at people passing by.
- Filter, filter, filter. Don't overwhelm your date with negative stories about an ex or other "emotional throw-up," Barbie says. "They're going to connect the dots inaccurately about you. Let them get to know you as a person."
- Avoid sex on your first date. Barbie says that while it may sound old-fashioned, she favors showing restraint when it comes to sex on a first date.
- Don't judge someone prematurely. If you turn down a second date because someone was an inch shorter than your wish-list criteria, Barbie says you may want to take a closer look at yourself and what you're truly looking for.
