Is it possible to make it big from humble beginnings? Jean talks to Janina Gavankar, one of the hottest new stars of the Showtime series The L Word. Janina plays the role of Papi, a promiscuous lesbian. To land the part, Janina says she stayed in character during the audition from start to finish—including hitting on the receptionist. Janina is also the on-screen talent on Microsoft's MSdewey.com, a search engine that speaks to its users.
Jean talks to Janina about how she broke into the entertainment industry, and her plans for keeping up the momentum. Janina shares her secrets for making it big:
Janina says she started small and stuck with it. Her first gig was a commercial for a financial services company.
On The L Word, Janina's first big-time gig, she works with the likes of Cybill Shepherd. "I ask a lot of questions," Janina says. "I'm sure it's annoying, but 30 years from now, I'd like to be working just like they are."
Janina prepares for the future. Acting is a fickle business, so she puts as much of her income away as possible.
Janina has her hand in everything, from TV to the Internet to an independent film coming out later this year.
