Love in the World
![]() Want to know your soul? Oprah says spiritualist Gary Zukav's The Seat of the Soul has changed her life in so many ways, yet she's confused about one of Zukav's premises. In this second part of The Soul Series, Oprah challenges Gary's contention that there is "only love" in the world. How can this be, she asks, when we have so much hatred, bigotry and violence all around us? How do we explain Rwanda, Bosnia and Iraq?
Zukav says when he looks at those places, he sees pain, suffering and brutality. He says this view is through the filter of what he refers to as the "five sensory perception." He says we need to look beyond what we can see, smell and touch, and see the world from the perspective of the soul. When you see the world through this larger view of the soul, Gary explains, you begin to see the meaning of all that happens in your life—good and bad—and begin the process of changing your own consciousness. "In that way, you change the world," he says. "If you want the world to be more kind, be more kind yourself." So begins an evolution of human consciousness that Gary observes is happening all around us. Gary disagrees with the notion that there is an external force such as evil or Satan that is behind all the misery in the world. "If you entertain the possibility that there is only love in the universe, with a capital L, then the question becomes, 'Why is there so much suffering?' And the answer then becomes, 'Because we put it here.' So to remove it, we have to change…we need to change individually and collectively in order to bring a heaven unto earth." Gary says this doesn't come through prayer or meditation, it comes only through changing our actions and behaviors. Oprah wonders if this shift in global consciousness is ever going to happen. Gary remains optimistic: "It's going to happen because I'm making it happen in me…you're making it happen in you."
